Is Autonomo worth it?

What you really want is to find MORE work, (You can still work as an autonomo.)
If you're supplementing your income with private classes with private individuals (requiring contacts), then it's probably unnecessary to be autonomo.
Note also that many people don't want the hassle (or the expense ) of being autonomo. You can pick up other in-company jobs other people can't as some firms will ONLY employ you if you are autonomo.
I think you want TWO in-company jobs to make it worth while, given that the first isn't paying you that much.

Is Autonomo worth it?
I was offered a job paying around 1200 euros a month for 18 hrs a week. I would have to register as an autonomo (freelancer) which cost around 220 euros a month. Would it be feasible to pick up enough privates to subsidize my income? I am not looking to stay in Madrid ( or spain) for long term, just a year or so. Is this worth it.
Thank you in advance. edited by BaDonK on 1/17/2008

Teaching Salary, Rates
Teaching in Madrid, Capital (and immediate surroundings): Generally speaking:
Laboral contract (legally working with social security & taxes paid by academy/employer): in academy: 10-12€ per hour in-company: 12€ per hour.
Autónomo (legally registered freelance/self employed where you are paying your own social security & taxes, and you invoice the client) Through an agency: 18-20€ per hour Direct contract: 25-35€ per hour (in company) private students: 18-20€ per hour
Under the table (a.k.a. working illegally*, no social security payments and not paying taxes): in-academy/agency: 12-15€ per hour on your own: 10-20€ per hour
*working illegally includes those workers without working permits (typically Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc) and those with an EU passport but are not registered \"autónomo\" and are paid as \"freelance workers\". Something which is quite common in some teaching institutions. If you are a holder of an EU passport, are being compensated in this manner and plan on staying in Spain long term (longer than 2 years) it is in your best interest to register as autónomo and avoid any unpleasant surprises in the future. (i.e. being held responsible for any unpaid back taxes and social security).

Burned out in Spain
Zorro Posts 3

I understand that based upon the experience that people may have had in their past before coming to Teach English in Spain and also very much depending on where they are from how their points of view could be quite different.
There are a lot of people that start out with a love for Spain and all things Spanish and who are willing to put up with a whole lot more than the ones of us who do not really care where we are as long as we can survive. This is the price they are willing to pay in order to be in Spain.
Also, if you have never taught English anywhere else before coming to Spain and have no other viable countries to compare it to, it can seem a much better than it really is.
I suppose the right thing to do is not get caught up in the fight of the things that you can not fix and to just do what is right for you depending on your situation. If you are not in it for the long haul then I suppose you could just show up on time and improvise all of your lessons. I mean, if they do not care, then why should you? Just keep showing up to wherever they send you, bouncing around from place to place, while the agreements lasts and when you have done it long enough just leave.
If you are a more serious teacher, then set standards for yourself, because nobody will do that for you. You can keep doing your lesson plans and keep plugging along quitting all of the rubbish jobs as you go along until you finally one day land the better gigs. I mean the cream rises to the top, right. So if you are as good a teacher as you say you are then it is only a matter of time before you get the 18 to 20 euros an hour jobs instead of being stuck in the 12 to 15 euro an hour ones. Who knows, you might even get a good contract that meeta all of your needs. All you have to do is focus on doing something about the things that you can control and not waste your time on the things that you can't (It does you no good to complain about the rain). You can always be more prepared and be a better teacher but you can not change the way things work as far as English teaching goes here in Spain.
Remember that the sacrifice is holding out for the better jobs, while resisting the temptation to accept the more scattered / lesser jobs, knowing full well that you could really use the money.
The biggest problem I think happens when people agree to teach English against their will or do it out of desperation. I am sure that if everyone was in the position to be able to hold out for the more ideal jobs and conditions they wanted there would not be as many unhappy people teaching.

There are very few academies that appreciate people with experience. As long as you are a native speaker, dress well and get from one place to the next, then you're hired. You can have years of experience and teach with others who just stepped off the plane and everyone will be paid the same thing.
You will encounter many students who are not serious at all and are just doing it because their job makes them do it. They won't be able to do any outside work because they have a family or a busy schedule and I look at that as lack of time mangement skills. They always complain that they don't have time to practice English and when I give them concrete ways of doing it in small, manageable chunks, they then make more excuses.

Im 18, Will I be able to work in Spain?
Ok I have a question maybe someone could answer it for me. I'm currently 18 years old and attending high school. I am fluent in Spanish. I will have enough credits to graduate in mid January 2009.
First question: Is it very likely I could find a job teaching English in Spain between the months of Feburary 2009 and June (I can stay in Spain until the end of July) preferably in a high school or something?
Second question, if so would it be a big advantage when finding a job that I have the TEFL certificate?
And third question would it matter that I have not attended university yet (although I intend to as of September 2009)?
If someone could answer these questions it would really help me get the ball rolling on what I need to do to prepare myself.

How do I find Work in Spain?
I want to work in Spain for at least 6 months in Sept/Oct. I have never been there. I'm an Australian but have EU. Have a Grad Dip TESOL (similar to DELTA) am fluent in Spanish (lived in Chile for a bit) and a quite few years' experience. Was assured on another forum that I could get work without too much difficulty. I'm also a DoS but am not looking for that in Spain.
I'm not keen on teaching kids. Is this a must? Most ads seem to ask for it. A licence- Do most jobs require one? If so, I'll have to learn to drive on the other side of the road but wouldn't want to buy a car at this point.
Finally, would it be better to just resume-drop when I get there? I'd love to go now but I think it wise to get some $$$ in the bank first so I can relax when I'm there.
I know Madrid is probably the best place but I'm up for somewhere quiet at this point in my life. Might try a medium sized town but where to start!?

We are serious about our program and believe it's the best in Ukraine. We are so confident that we offer our students a 100% refund if they are not happy with their course or instructor.
